The formula, explained
How Does Zeaxan Work? The Daily Blend Explained
Zeaxan is meant to work as a daily habit: 2 capsules a day of a 600 mg blend with 11 ingredients.
The two with the most eye research are lutein and zeaxanthin. The studied AREDS2 formula used 10 mg lutein and 2 mg zeaxanthin a day.

The brand's idea
How is Zeaxan supposed to work?
Zeaxan is meant to work as a daily habit: 2 capsules a day that add a mix of eye nutrients, herbs and B vitamins to your diet. The brand does not explain how each ingredient should act, and no study of the finished product has been published.
The brand's own "How Zeaxan Works" graphic has three steps: follow the label directions, take the product formula, and keep a daily routine. That describes how to use it, not what happens in your eyes. The bottle front says "Supports Eye Health*" and "Supports Comfort*", and the star sends you to the FDA statement on the side label.
So we look at each ingredient, what research found for it, and whether the amount could matter. The amount is the hard part: the label prints only the blend total (21 CFR 101.36). See the typed Supplement Facts panel.

The eye nutrients
What do lutein and zeaxanthin do for your eyes?
They have real eye research behind them, at set doses. That is why the missing amounts matter.
Lutein and zeaxanthin are carotenoids, plant pigments found in leafy greens, egg yolks, corn and squash (Wilson et al., 2021). Researchers study them because of macular pigment in the macula, the part of the eye that gives sharp, central vision (Wilson et al., 2021) (MedlinePlus, 2024).
The best-known test is the AREDS2 formula: 10 mg of lutein and 2 mg of zeaxanthin a day, together with vitamin C, vitamin E, zinc and copper (NEI, AREDS2). A Cochrane review found that AREDS-type supplements probably slow progression in people who already have AMD, while lutein and zeaxanthin on their own showed little effect (Cochrane, 2023).
Zeaxan lists lutein 5th and zeaxanthin 10th of 11. By our arithmetic, a serving holds at most about 6 mg of lutein and 3 mg of zeaxanthin, and likely much less. Those are ceilings, not the real amounts. More on the lutein and zeaxanthin page.
Ingredient by ingredient
What is each Zeaxan ingredient meant to do?
Most of the blend is not an eye nutrient.
| Label order | Ingredient | Usually sold for | What research shows |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Himalayan pink salt | Not explained by the brand | No eye research; sodium Daily Value is under 2,300 mg (FDA, sodium) |
| 2 | Cinnamon extract | Not explained on the label | Not clearly supported for any condition (NCCIH, cinnamon) |
| 3 | AGP choline (alpha-GPC) | Memory | No eye trials; one cohort linked it to stroke risk, not proof (Lee et al., 2021) |
| 4 | Bacopa monnieri | Memory and focus | Small, mixed memory trials; no eye trials (StatPearls, bacopa) |
| 5 | Lutein | Eye health | Part of AREDS2 at 10 mg for people with AMD (NEI, AREDS2) |
| 6 | Bilberry leaf powder | Night vision | Rigorous trials found no better night vision (Canter and Ernst, 2004) |
| 7 | Vitamin B6 | General nutrition | Essential; no eye benefit shown (NIH ODS, B6) |
| 8 | Ginkgo biloba | Circulation and memory | Not shown for eyes; bleeding risk with blood thinners (NCCIH, ginkgo) |
| 9 | Vitamin B12 | General nutrition | Helps only if you are low (NIH ODS, B12) |
| 10 | Zeaxanthin | Eye health | Part of AREDS2 at 2 mg for people with AMD (NEI, AREDS2) |
| 11 | Green tea extract | Not explained on the label | No eye trials; rare liver injury from extract pills (LiverTox, green tea) |
Two of the 11 have direct eye research, and the four heaviest have none. Compare all of them side by side on the ingredients page.
The benchmark
Does Zeaxan work the same way as AREDS2?
No. AREDS2 is a set formula with printed doses, tested in people with AMD. Zeaxan shares two ingredients and nothing else.
| Nutrient | AREDS2 daily dose (NEI, AREDS2) | Zeaxan (2 capsules) |
|---|---|---|
| Lutein | 10 mg | Not published |
| Zeaxanthin | 2 mg | Not published |
| Vitamin C | 500 mg | Not in the formula |
| Vitamin E | 400 IU | Not in the formula |
| Zinc | 80 mg | Not in the formula |
| Copper | 2 mg | Not in the formula |
Intermediate or late AMD
The formula cut the risk of advanced AMD by about 25% over 5 years in these people (NEI, AREDS2).
No AMD or early AMD
NEI found no benefit for people without AMD or with early AMD (NEI, 2020).
Why beta-carotene left
AREDS2 dropped beta-carotene after more lung cancers in smokers (NEI, beta-carotene).
If an eye doctor has told you that you have intermediate AMD, ask about the AREDS2 formula by name. Read what AREDS2 means for you.

What can Zeaxan not do?
Zeaxan does not treat or reverse AMD, cataracts, glaucoma or dry eye, and it does not restore lost vision. NEI says supplements cannot prevent AMD in people who do not have it (NEI, 2020), and the label itself says the product is not meant to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.
Cataracts are removed only by surgery (NEI, cataracts), and glaucoma often has no early symptoms (NEI, glaucoma). Only an eye exam finds them.
Your own check
How can you tell if Zeaxan is working for you?
You cannot measure it at home, so set simple checks before you start. Weekly notes and an eye exam give you something real to compare.
- Book a baseline eye exam: at least by age 40, and every 1-2 years after 65 (AAO, 2021).
- Write down how your eyes feel each week, especially after screen time.
- Take it the same way every day: 2 capsules between meals, as the label says.
- Stop and call your doctor if you notice side effects, and check the side effects page.
The results timeline explains what to expect over the first 60 days, and why the brand publishes no timeline of its own.
FAQ
Questions about how Zeaxan works
How long does it take for Zeaxan to work?
No one knows, because no timeline is published and no trial has tested Zeaxan. The brand panel only says best results come with daily use. Give any change at least a few weeks of steady use, keep notes, and compare them with an eye exam rather than with seller claims.
What does zeaxanthin do for your eyes?
Zeaxanthin is a carotenoid that eye researchers study for its link to macular pigment in the macula, the part of the eye for sharp central vision. In AREDS2 it was used at 2 mg a day with lutein, vitamins and zinc for people with AMD. Zeaxan lists it 10th of 11 and prints no amount.
Why is Zeaxan named after zeaxanthin if it is listed 10th?
The brand does not explain the name. Zeaxanthin is 10th of 11 ingredients, so it is one of the smallest parts of the 600 mg blend. Our best-case math puts it at about 3 mg at most per serving, and the real amount is not published.
Why does an eye supplement contain bacopa and alpha-GPC?
The brand does not explain it. Bacopa and alpha-GPC are usually sold for memory, not eyes, and neither has eye trials. Bacopa can upset the stomach and is not advised with thyroid medicine, and one large study linked alpha-GPC to stroke risk without proving cause.
Is Zeaxan backed by clinical studies?
No study of Zeaxan itself has been published. Some of its ingredients were studied on their own, such as lutein and zeaxanthin in AREDS2, but at set doses and mostly in people with AMD. FTC guidance says health claims should rest on randomized, controlled human trials.
Does Zeaxan help with eye strain from screens?
There is no evidence that it does. The bottle says "Supports Comfort*", but no trial has tested the blend. For screen strain, AAO suggests the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look 20 feet away for 20 seconds. Strain does not cause permanent damage.
Do lutein and zeaxanthin from food work as well as pills?
Food is the usual source, and there is no official daily target for lutein or zeaxanthin. Americans get about 1-2 mg a day from leafy greens, egg yolks, corn and squash. Pills were tested at set doses in AREDS2 for people who already had AMD.
