Zeaxan and Medicines: 6 Checks Before You Mix

Quick answer

Zeaxan contains ginkgo, bacopa, green tea extract, alpha-GPC and vitamins B6 and B12, and each has its own medicine question. Check six things: blood thinners, thyroid medicine, liver-cleared drugs, metformin, stroke history and other supplements. Ask a pharmacist before the first capsule, and take the bottle with you.

At a glance

Key facts

  • Ginkgo may raise bleeding risk in people who take warfarin or another blood thinner.
  • People on thyroid medicine are told not to use bacopa, which is in the blend.
  • Bacopa slows several liver enzymes that break down drugs. A pharmacist can check your list.
  • Metformin can lower vitamin B12, and the B12 amount in Zeaxan is not published.
  • Alpha-GPC has an observational link to higher stroke risk. Ask first if you have had a stroke.
  • Blood sugar and blood pressure effects of Zeaxan are not published.
  • The label says individuals with a known medical condition should consult a physician before use.

The method

How do you check Zeaxan against your medicines?

Make a list first. Write down every prescription, every over-the-counter product and every vitamin or herb you take, with the dose if you know it. Then bring that list and the Zeaxan bottle to a pharmacist. The reason is simple: the blend has 11 ingredients, and the label prints no single amount, so the pharmacist needs to see all the names.

The six checks below follow the ingredient that causes each question. They come from the NIH and the MSD Manual, as cited, not from a trial of Zeaxan. None has been tested in the product, so each is a reason to ask, not a verdict.

  1. Blood thinners

    Ginkgo.

  2. Thyroid medicine

    Bacopa.

  3. Liver-cleared drugs and liver disease

    Bacopa, green tea extract, cinnamon.

  4. Metformin

    Vitamin B12.

  5. Stroke history

    Alpha-GPC.

  6. Other supplements

Vitamin B6, lutein and zeaxanthin totals.

Check 1

Check 1: Can you take Zeaxan with blood thinners?

Ask first. NCCIH says ginkgo may increase bleeding risk in people who take anticoagulants such as warfarin (NCCIH, ginkgo). Zeaxan lists ginkgo eighth of 11, so the amount is likely small, but it is not printed, so nobody can weigh it against your dose.

People often ask about specific brand-name blood thinners. Our sources do not name any drug other than warfarin. The rule they support is the general one: if your medicine thins the blood, ask your doctor or pharmacist before taking Zeaxan. If you are not sure whether your medicine counts, ask that too. Is zeaxanthin itself a blood thinner? Our sources do not say so, and they do not say it is safe with one either, so the question stays open. For a deeper look at the herb alone, read our post on ginkgo and blood thinners.

Check 2

Check 2: Is Zeaxan a problem with thyroid medicine?

It may be. The MSD Manual says people who take thyroid medicine should not use bacopa (MSD Manual, bacopa). Bacopa is the fourth ingredient in the Zeaxan blend, and the amount is not published, so your doctor cannot judge the dose either.

If you take thyroid medicine, do not decide on your own. Show the doctor who manages it the full ingredient list. They may suggest skipping Zeaxan altogether.

Check 3

Check 3: What if your medicines or your liver need care?

Two separate points sit here. First, StatPearls notes that bacopa slows several liver enzymes that break down drugs (StatPearls, bacopa). If a prescription of yours is cleared by those enzymes, a pharmacist can say whether bacopa matters.

Second, green tea extract pills are a rare but well-established cause of liver injury (LiverTox, green tea), and cassia cinnamon has coumarin (NCCIH, cinnamon). If you have liver disease, or take a medicine that can strain the liver, ask your doctor before you begin. Do not stack Zeaxan with other green tea extract products.

Check 4

Check 4: What about metformin and blood sugar?

Metformin can lower vitamin B12 levels (NIH ODS, B12). Zeaxan lists vitamin B12 (as cyanocobalamin 1%) ninth of 11, but prints no amount, so it cannot replace a blood test or a plan from your doctor. Adults need 2.4 mcg of B12 a day, and no upper limit is set.

Does zeaxanthin lower blood sugar? Our sources do not say. We cannot claim an effect, and we cannot rule one out. People with diabetes should ask their doctor first, as the label advises for anyone with a medical condition, and should have a dilated eye exam at least once a year.

Check 5

Check 5: Does a past stroke change the answer?

It may. A large observational study linked alpha-GPC to higher stroke risk over 10 years (Lee et al., 2021). That does not prove cause, and no one knows the effect of an unpublished amount in two capsules. Still, the label lists AGP choline third. If you have had a stroke, or have stroke risk factors, bring the question to your doctor before you start.

Check 6

Check 6: How do you add up other supplements?

Add by ingredient, not by product. Another eye vitamin adds more lutein and zeaxanthin. A B-complex adds more vitamin B6, and the upper limit for B6 is 100 mg a day (NIH ODS, B6). A multivitamin may carry both. Because Zeaxan prints no single amounts, an exact total is impossible, so a pharmacist's judgment is the best tool.

Common questions include omega 3 and astaxanthin. Our sources do not cover combining Zeaxan with either one, so we call that not published. Ask your pharmacist, and tell every doctor about each supplement you take, since natural does not always mean safe (NCCIH, 2019).

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Does zeaxanthin interact with any medications?

Our sources do not list an interaction for lutein or zeaxanthin on their own. Zeaxan is a blend of 11 ingredients, and several of them do interact: ginkgo with blood thinners, bacopa with thyroid medicine, and metformin with vitamin B12.

Does zeaxanthin interact with warfarin?

Not published for zeaxanthin alone. The Zeaxan blend contains ginkgo, and NCCIH says ginkgo may increase bleeding risk with warfarin (NCCIH, ginkgo). If you take warfarin, ask your doctor or pharmacist before using Zeaxan.

Is it okay to take Zeaxan if I use a blood thinner?

Only after you ask. The ginkgo amount is not printed, so no one can weigh it against your dose. Bring the bottle to your pharmacist, and report unusual bleeding to your doctor right away.

Does zeaxanthin lower blood sugar or blood pressure?

Not published. None of our sources says it does either. If you take medicine for diabetes or blood pressure, treat that as a reason to ask your doctor, not as a guess.

Can I take Zeaxan with omega 3 or other supplements?

Not published for omega 3. In general, add up what each product contains. Another eye vitamin adds lutein and zeaxanthin, and a B-complex adds B6, whose upper limit is 100 mg a day.

Who should avoid Zeaxan altogether?

Anyone under 18, because the bottle reads Adult Use Only. Pregnant or nursing mothers and people with a known medical condition should see a physician first. People on thyroid medicine should ask because of bacopa.

Where we land

Our view

Interaction questions are the best reason to talk to a professional before trying any blend supplement. The risks are not high on paper, and most are tied to one herb each. They matter because the label hides the amounts, and the pharmacist cannot do the arithmetic you would like.

Write your list, bring the bottle and ask. Zeaxan is not FDA approved, and it never replaces a medicine your doctor prescribed. Nothing here is personal medical advice.
