Zeaxanthin Foods: Where to Find It and Easy Ways to Eat More
The main zeaxanthin foods are green leafy vegetables, egg yolks, corn and squash. The same foods carry lutein too. American adults get about 1 to 2 mg of lutein and zeaxanthin a day from food, and there is no official daily target. Eating these foods most days, with a little fat, is the simplest way to get more.

The basics
Why do zeaxanthin foods matter?
Your body cannot make zeaxanthin. Every bit of it in your eyes came from what you ate or from a supplement (Wilson et al., 2021). That makes your plate the first place to look.
Zeaxanthin is a yellow carotenoid that collects in the macula with lutein, where the two form macular pigment. Researchers have studied how eating more of these pigments relates to macular pigment levels (Wilson et al., 2021). The good news is that the foods are cheap, common and easy to cook.
Food also gives you fiber, vitamins, minerals and many other plant compounds at the same time. No capsule copies that full package, which is why a food habit comes first.
The list
Which foods have the most zeaxanthin?
Four food groups stand out in the research we use: green leafy vegetables, egg yolks, corn and squash (Wilson et al., 2021). Each one is easy to find in a normal grocery store.
| Food group | Why it is on the list | Easy way to eat it |
|---|---|---|
| Green leafy vegetables, such as kale, spinach and collards | The best-known source of both lutein and zeaxanthin | Sauteed in olive oil, or in a salad with dressing |
| Egg yolks | The yolk carries both pigments, along with fat that helps uptake | Scrambled with a handful of spinach |
| Corn | A common, low-cost yellow source | In soup, salsa or as a side dish |
| Squash | Adds both carotenoids to a meal | Roasted with a little oil |
How much sits in one egg or one cup of kale is not published in our sources, so we leave those numbers out. The pattern is what matters most: dark greens and yellow foods, eaten often.
Kitchen tip
Why eat zeaxanthin foods with a little fat?
Carotenoids such as zeaxanthin travel with fat, not water. Greens with a drizzle of oil, or eggs cooked with spinach, pair the pigment with fat in one easy step.
Cooking style matters less than habit. Raw, steamed or sauteed, the best zeaxanthin food is the one you will happily eat again tomorrow.
- Add a handful of spinach to your morning eggs.
- Keep frozen corn in the freezer for soups and salsas.
- Use dark greens instead of pale lettuce in salads.
- Roast squash on a sheet pan with olive oil once or twice a week.

What does a zeaxanthin-friendly day of eating look like?
It looks like normal food. For breakfast, scramble eggs with spinach. For lunch, build a salad on kale or mixed dark greens with an olive oil dressing and a scoop of corn. For dinner, serve roasted squash next to sauteed collards or another leafy green.
None of these meals needs a special shop or a recipe book. Small swaps add up across a week, and they bring lutein and zeaxanthin together, the way most research studies them (Wilson et al., 2021).
If you eat few vegetables today, start with one swap and build from there. A habit you keep beats a big plan you drop after a week.
The capsule
Zeaxanthin foods or a supplement: where does Zeaxan fit?
Food comes first. A supplement can be an optional extra for people who want lutein and zeaxanthin in a fixed daily routine. Zeaxan lists both, lutein 5th and zeaxanthin 10th, in a 600 mg blend per 2-capsule serving (21 CFR 101.36).
The label prints no single amounts. Our best-case math puts a serving at about 6 mg of lutein and 3 mg of zeaxanthin at most, and likely less. AREDS2 used 10 mg and 2 mg a day in people with AMD (NEI, AREDS2). See the zeaxanthin dosage guide and the Supplement Facts page for the full working.
If you choose Zeaxan, the label says to take 2 capsules daily between meals. Our how to use guide has simple timing ideas that fit around your meals.
Keep your exams
Do zeaxanthin foods replace an eye exam?
No. Good food and a supplement can support a healthy routine, but only an exam can show what is going on inside your eyes. The AAO advises a baseline exam by age 40 and an exam every one to two years after 65 (AAO, 2021).
If you have diabetes, get a dilated eye exam at least once a year (NEI, diabetic eye). Sudden flashes of light, many new floaters or a curtain over your vision need an eye doctor the same day (AAO, retina). Our eye health guide has exam timing by age.
FAQ
Zeaxanthin foods: common questions
What food is highest in zeaxanthin?
Our sources name green leafy vegetables, egg yolks, corn and squash as the main sources, and they do not rank single foods by amount (Wilson et al., 2021). Dark greens such as kale and spinach are the best-known choice, and corn adds a yellow source.
How much zeaxanthin do people get from food?
American adults get about 1 to 2 mg a day of lutein and zeaxanthin together from food, and there is no official daily target (Wilson et al., 2021). For comparison, AREDS2 used 10 mg of lutein and 2 mg of zeaxanthin a day in people with AMD.
Can I take Zeaxan and still eat zeaxanthin foods?
Yes. Food comes first, and a capsule is an extra on top. Zeaxan lists lutein and zeaxanthin in its 600 mg blend at 2 capsules a day. If you also take other eye vitamins, show all your labels to your pharmacist.
